The 2021-22 performance season marks the 20th Anniversary of the Legacy Chorale of Greater Minnesota! Our theme for this season, Celebrations In Song, was also the title of the chorale’s very first concert series in the fall of 2002! It seems only fitting to conclude such a milestone by circling back to our roots! Our hope is that the 2021-22 performance season will indeed be a time of celebration: of new life, of new beginnings, and of new hope for a brighter future.

"How Can We Keep From Singing?" is taken from the title of a book written by Minnesota author Joan Oliver Goldsmith and is based on the old American hymn, "How Can I Keep from Singing?" The hymn's text speaks directly to the power of music and especially music that is sung: “My life flows on in endless song… It finds an echo in my soul... How can I keep from singing?”

Goldsmith's book, published in 2001, is an exploration of why the over 20 million Americanswho sing in community choirs across the U.S., choose to participate in volunteer group

In addition to the title piece, the program will include other works about the joys of singing: Eric Whitacre’s stunning work, “Sing Gently,” which was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and performed by more than 17,000 singers from around the world in Whitacre's Virtual Choir 6; "With a Voice of Singing" by the late Minnesota composer, Kenneth Jennings; "Sing," an energetic celebration of vocal music by Pentatonix; "I Will Sing" by Rosephanye Powell, a roof-raising gospel-style work; I’m Gonna Sing ‘Til the Spirit Moves in My Heart” for men’s choir; “A Song for You” by The Carpenters; “Voice on the Wind” for women’s choir by Sarah Quartel; “I Sing Because I’m Happy,” adapted by Rollo Dilworth; and many more!

In addition to Goldsmith, school choirs from Brainerd, Aitkin and Pequot Lakes will be joining the chorale for this concert series, as well as several area instrumental accompanists.

Our 20 th Anniversary Finale Concerts will recognize not only our milestone season, but also our veteran singers, our Artistic Director’s retirement, special sponsors, and especially all of YOU-our devoted audience members who have supported us for 20 wonderful years!! With so many things to celebrate, truly “How Can We Keep From Singing?!”

**In a St. Olaf College News press release (September 14, 1991), Joan Oliver Goldsmith's book was hailed as "a celebration of the world of song. Goldsmith brings the reader inside the music she loves... She shares her inspirations and wisdom..." In this "rousing book that salutes the passion, the joy, and the pleasures of singing, music, and practice" (Spirituality and Health), Joan Oliver Goldsmith celebrates America's over 20 million singers and "teaches us pursue a creative passion is a true act of love" (New Age).

This concert is made possible in part by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Five Wings Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
